As the space in a van is limited, useful storage is definitely a must. There are multiple different creative ways you can choose from when it comes to finding suitable storage options. But to help you along the way, we have brought together some of the best storage ideas.
Another thing that you might find in your van are some tight corners. However, you shouldn’t let this space go to waste. Things such as little containers will most likely fit perfectly.
Adding things such as a table or even a desk, can be a massive waste of space. So before you go and add a table, you should definitely ask yourself if you do actually need a table in your van. If this is something you were considering but no longer are, a really good alternative are portable tables.
If you like adventures in the mud, you will most certainly want to avoid tripping over your dirty boots (or anything else). This is definitely something a lot of people tend to forget about, leaving them becoming quite annoyed. We recommend that any loose items should have a specific area sectioned off to avoid any incidents occurring.
Where you are going to be sleeping, is definitely something that will be at the top of your checklist. Whether it’s a permanent fixture or something with a little more flexibility that you are looking for, we have you covered!
If you are choosing to look at other ideas by other van owners online, it is important to keep in mind the layout of your van. It would be very disappointing if you found a camper bed design you really liked, but you can’t have it due to the layout of your van.
There are two main types of bed designs that people have in their vans. The first being the platform bed, and the other being the convertible bed.
The platform bed is one of the most standard bed designs available to you. Platform beds have one dedicated bed space and will stay in a fixed position. Many people prefer this bed as it doesn’t require any assembling. You will find that with most fixed position beds, there will be quite a lot of room for storage underneath.
Things such as clothes, bikes, water, or any other equipment can be placed in this space. However, one of the disadvantages to having fixed position beds is that they do not leave a lot of room for seating.
The other option you can go for are convertible beds. These fold up when they’re not being used to leave room for seating or any large adventure equipment.
Convertible beds are very convenient if you need a comfortable workspace, or if you want to entertain quite a few people in your van. However there is a downside to the convertible beds, which is that they do take some time to put together.
Van decals are a cheaper & quicker alternative to full van wraps. They are usually designed with the body work colour of the van in mind, rather than covering the whole of the bodywork like a van wrap.
When in your van, there are certainly things you will want to add to ensure your experience is the best it can be.
The first thing you will want to consider is how much you would like to insulate your van. To help with this, we suggest that you take into account your location and the climate.
There are multiple different ways you can heat your van, and which one you choose widely depends on your preferred choice of fuel as well as your budget. Electric heaters aren’t always the best choice as they are not very efficient. You will also need a lot of battery power to run an electric heater in a van.
For food, it is possible to only use dry & tinned food. However, it is very likely that you will have certain things that need to stay cool in your van. When it comes to water, things such as a freshwater tank are available for you to add to your van. Having enough water for your trip is very important, especially if you are planning to go somewhere that is very secluded.
Electricity is an essential part of your van conversion. You will most certainly need some form of lighting in your van, and very likely need to use electricity to run your refrigerator or charge your electronic devices.
A good night’s sleep is very essential to your health and wellbeing. The amount of people that you will be travelling with, and the space available in your chosen van will dictate your sleeping arrangements.
A comfortable mattress may be a good idea, especially after a long day of driving or exploring. However, you may also be just as comfortable sleeping on an air bed or even some camping mats.
When in your van, you won’t have all the comforts of a home like warm showers and an endless supply of water. But, you will need a way to wash yourself and go to the toilet. A lot of people tend to purchase a portable toilet, which are extremely useful in a van, or composting or cassette toilets
For a shower, you could use a solar camp shower, where you heat the water using the sun, or a powered 12V shower, which is essentially a 12V pump with a shower head that runs off your van’s batteries. I have both; I use the camp shower to warm up the water, and the 12V shower to shower with decent pressure.
Since your van will be like your very own home on wheels, you’ll need to consider safety and security just like you would at home. Your personal safety, and the security of your van and all of your belongings should be taken very seriously. Some people like to fit a GPS tracker which can alert you via text message if your van has been stolen.
You can also fit deadlocks on to your doors, making it more difficult for thieves to break in. Putting all your valuables away in a hidden safe or taking them out with you, will also help prevent them from being stolen.
For personal safety, there are a few pieces of equipment you will definitely want to invest in. A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm should be fitted to your van. A fire extinguisher is also an essential item to have in your van. Another good item to have near your cooking area is a fire blanket. The ventilation in your van is also essential for your safety, especially if you do have any gas appliances in your van.
