What is a VW Kombi?

Firstly, let’s start off with the basics. What is a VW Kombi? Well, a VW Kombi, is a forward control light commercial van. It was introduced back in 1950, and is a van which has removable rear seats and side windows. It includes a few different modifications as standard, including:

  • Opening windows
  • Removable rear seats (usually 3)
  • Extra lining in the rear of van
  • Sometimes USB sockets in the rear of the van
  • More insulation
  • More like a car

Kombi's can come directly from Volkswagen or they can be converted by a campervan conversion company. This is done by purchasing a standard VW Transporter panel van and adding seats, insulation, windows etc to the rear.

Other Volkswagen models also offer a Kombi version. Including the VW Caddy Kombi Conversion - Caddy Life and the Crafter.

How much does a VW Kombi Conversion cost?

You can pay around £45,000 - £55,000 for a brand-new VW Kombi.

To convert a traditional VW T5 or VW T6 panel van into a VW Kombi Conversion it will cost somewhere between £5,000 and £10,000.

They are more expensive than a panel van. This is why we don't recommend using a Kombi for your campervan conversion base vehicle. The Kombi elements of the vehicle would go to waste. You're much better using a standard Transporter panel van for a campervan conversion. Check out our full guide on choosing your Campervan Conversion base vehicle

The first van accessory that has made its way onto the list, are pop top roofs. This van accessory is perfect for campervans, as they allow for extra headroom inside your campervan. This is extremely advantageous for those who fancy a little bit more extra headroom for cooking or even sleeping.

Pop top roofs can also be colour coded so that they match the colour of your campervan, making it look even more fabulous. The colour and style is your choice! However, when it comes to pop top roofs, there are a few things you will want to keep in mind.

You definitely will want to make sure that the pop top roof that you are going to be purchasing has gone through a series of crash tests, to ensure that the pop top roof meets all standard safety requirements and is reliable.

Don't forget you can still add campervan conversion upgrades. Such as Solar Panel Systems or Awnings.

Still looking at van roof accessories, we highly recommend investing in some roof bars. Roof bars are a great solution for those of you who are looking to go on a very adventurous and action-packed holiday! They are perfect for carrying large items such as bikes, or even for freeing up some space inside your VW Kombi Van.

If you're planning on using your kombi as a day van or campervan awnings and awning rails will give you the opportunity to add additional space.

To go even further, you can also add a wind deflector. It reduces the wind noise, making your travel a lot more enjoyable. Other campervan accessories you might find interesting are:

VW Kombi Bodywork

The bodywork of your VW Kombi van plays such an important role in the overall appearance. After all, it is going to be one of the most noticeable features of your VW Kombi van. Most professional companies will complete many of the unique and even crazy designs that you have in mind.

However, there are a couple of things you should do before getting your bodywork done. First of all, you should make sure that there are no dents or scratches at all. If there are, you should definitely prioritise this and get them all fixed and removed. There is absolutely no point in you having any bodywork done on your VW Kombi van if there are any scratches or dents.

When this is completed, you can now get started on creating the design that you want for your VW Kombi van. This could be one colour all over or even a half-and-half respray.

Whatever it is, the choice is yours to make. Pinterest is a great platform for those of you who fancy a little bit of inspiration. Other social media platforms are also a great way to get some ideas for your VW Kombi van’s bodywork.
