Van Detailing: How to keep your van looking awesome

What most people don’t realise is that van detailing isn’t as simple as it sounds. Yes it is the process of thoroughly cleaning both the interior and exterior of a van, but there is so much more to it than that. When it comes to cleaning your van, it is so important that you do it properly to make sure that you get the best results you can possibly get!

Van Detailing

What is van detailing?

Van detailing is literally just a process in which the vehicle undergoes a process to clean and also extend the life by reducing the amount of environmental factors such as dirt. Van detailing is usually split into two parts; interior and exterior. For the interior side of things, interior detailing generally involves a deep clean. Things such as vacuuming and steam cleaning are procedures that are normally involved in the process. Moving onto the exterior, you will find that this usually involves cleaning and also restoring things such as windows, wheels, tyres, and also any other components that are on the outside of the vehicle.

What will I need for van detailing?

Now that you have some form of knowledge on van detailing, you are going to want to know exactly what it is that you will need for van detailing. So, in order to help you out in this specific area, we have decided to create a list of things that we strongly suggest that you have when it comes to van detailing.

First up, you are most certainly going to need microfibre towels. They are great for removing both dirt and dust from your van, whilst ensuring that everything is protected. Not only are they great for cleaning the van itself, but they are also perfect for drying it afterwards.

Next up on the list of what you will need for van detailing is brushes. This includes brushes for both the interior and exterior of the van. Places located on/in the van that have had dirt built up, will not be able to be removed by just simple regular cleaning. Instead, you will need to purchase specific types of brushes, to do specific types of jobs. For example, when it comes to cleaning the wheels of your van, wheel woolies will be the perfect type of brush for the job.

The third thing that is on the list of things that  you will need for van detailing is wax and sealant. Both of these products are perfect for adding finishing touches to your van. Not only can the vehicle wax provide an excellent shine to your van, but it can also help protect the exterior surface of the van from UV rays. Wax also provides a smooth layer of protection, meaning that something such as bird droppings can be removed easily.

Next, you are definitely going to want to invest in a car vacuum cleaner. There are multiple different types of car vacuum cleaners that you can use for the interior of your van. Even though cordless vacuums may seem like a great idea, they don’t always do the best job. This is because the suction power is not always sufficient enough to pick up all of the dirt that may be trapped on your van’s floor.

Another thing that you will need when it comes to van detailing, is van polisher. Van polisher can easily improve the appearance of any van. However, it is important to ensure that when you are applying the polisher to your van, that the pressure is consistent to prevent your van from looking quite cloudy in certain places.

Mistakes people make when it comes to van detailing

The first common mistake may seem like a harmless one at first. A lot of people think that it is okay to use their drying towels to remove any dirt that they missed when they were cleaning. However, you should never do this as it will put you at risk of scratching the paint off of your van,

The next really common mistake that people make when it comes to van detailing, is when they pour waxes and polishes directly onto the surface of their vans. By doing this, you can actually create dark and uneven streaks on your van. Instead, you should pour waxes onto your applicator.

When it comes to cleaning the exterior of your van, we are normally told to do it from the top down to the bottom. Even though this is the case, you should actually clean the wheels and tyres first. This is because they are normally the dirtiest part of your van, meaning that if you were to clean them last you would potentially splash all of the dirt onto the surface that you just cleaned.

Another mistake that you will definitely want to avoid making when it comes to van detailing, is using dish soap and detergents. You should always avoid using these products as they are actually formulated to remove grease and wax, meaning that they could strip away any waxes that are protecting your vehicle. Instead of using these products, you should try purchasing things such as automotive shampoo to do the job!

The last mistake that people often tend to make is when they use ammonia-based glass cleaner. Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen. Not only does ammonia smell, but it also can damage dashboard surfaces if it gets on them. To stop this from happening, you should always purchase non-ammonia glass cleaner

Top tips for when it comes to car detailing

If your knowledge in this area is not so strong, then having some top tips will definitely come in handy. Therefore, we have designed a list of top tips that you will definitely want to keep in mind when it comes to car detailing.

Firstly, when it comes to cleaning and drying the glass of your van you should do it in 2 different directions. What we mean by this, is that you should dry the exterior horizontally and then the interior vertically so that if there are any streaks, you can easily spot them and then remove them. Still continuing with the window, you should always clean the very top of the window. This is because excess product can actually build up in the window jamb, increasing the chances of streaking and dripping. All you have to do is wind the windows down slightly and then clean them.

When it comes to drying your van, you should always use a microfibre towel. A lot of people tend to think that letting their car air dry will do the job, but instead all it will do is just allow water marks to develop on the surface.

The next tip we have is to do with waxing and polishing. When it comes to removing swirl marks, you should always use polish rather than wax. With swirl marks as well, you should be rinsing your cloth or sponge regularly when washing. The dirt particles that may be on the cloth or sponge can actually cause damage to the paint on the van.

Another great tip we have for car detailing, is that you should always brush the carpet first when it comes to cleaning the interior. By doing this, you will agitate the carpet fibres, allowing the vacuum to clean up the dirt more easily. However, you should definitely be careful that you do not do this too hard as it can actually lead to fraying.

You should also avoid using silicone-based sprays when it comes to cleaning the inside of the van. This is because it can actually cause certain important components, such as the pedals, in your van to become quite slippery. We also strongly suggest that you apply any wax with a power buffer if you want the best possible results. However, if you are going to be doing this then it is important that you know exactly what it is you are doing. When it comes to removing the wax, you shouldn’t use the power buffer. Instead, you should remove it with a soft and dry cloth.

Cost is always an important factor for multiple people, especially when it comes to van related things. Some people are in a position where they have to watch what they spend, while others are not. But when it comes to van detailing, you definitely want to find and purchase things which are a great value for money. When it comes to the cost of car detailing, there isn’t a specific price. This is because the price tag can be influenced by multiple different aspects such as who completes the detailing, the brand of the products that you will be using, where you get the cleaning products from, and also how many products you get.
